Alone Time

[Haven Tam]

Haven opened the hatch, hoping her parents were asleep. Sneaking in, she found that wasn't so. Rubbing the back of her neck, she smiled brightly. Her mom was up reading agian. "Erm, hey mama." Grabbing her pajama's, Haven slipped them over her clothes. In this shuttle she learned how to change without showing anything. SLipping her jeans off, she pulled her top out form underneath.

Kaylee looked up as Haven walked in- trying to be quiet.

"Hey baby girl." She smiled sweetly then arched an eyebrow. "And where have you been? I just sent your father to find you and your brother- you two know i don't like you guys wandering around the ship this late." She smiled- trying not to sound as if she were scolding her. She had told both Haven and Daniel about the late-night visit from Early years before when they kept asking her why she didn't let them go around the ship late at night. Once haven had changed into her pajamas, Kaylee patted the bed next to her, "here, come sit by me." She smiled and gestured toward Haven.

Haven sat next to her mom. They had managed to crame three beds in here plus have two dressers, a trunk and other knick knacks. "I know he found me. I was talking to James. No one showed him a room you know." She wouldn't tell her mom yet about what had happened. It was personal. "I don't think Daniel is coming. He disappered a while ago and I can't find him." Haven could guess where he was, but wouldn't say right off. She wouldn't get him in trouble.

She looked at Haven oddly for a moment- "What do you mean you don't think he's coming?" She arched an eyebrow.

Haven leaned back on the bed. She was restless and tired at once. "He fell asleep. I walked by earlier and there was no noises coming from Bella's room." haven held up both hands. "I highly doubt he'd do anything. He's not stupid. Plus, Bella seems fragile."

Kaylee watched as Haven held up her hands. "I s'pose you're right. Of course I don't think that will be the first thing going through your father's mind." She looked away for a moment; then thought about both Daniel and Simon- "Of course, knowing your father and your brother as well as I do- I think it will be fine." She looked at Haven for a moment. "Now- why don't you tell me about this Jame's. What were you guys talking about that went on this late?" She smiled- hoping Haven would know she wasn't being nosy- she just wanted Haven to feel as though she could talk to her like her friend and less like her parent.

Haven thought about this. “True. But it’s Daniel. He couldn’t harm a fly.” She knew her brother. He was a perfect gentleman. Mostly. He love dot pick on her. Pulling her leg up, she shrugged. “Not much. Just about the ships he’s been on and owned. Mal. Serenity and what it was like growing up here.” Lots of kissing… She wouldn’t say that though. She would die.

Kaylee raised an eyebrow. "That's all?" She asked skeptically? She smiled sweetly and sat back against the headboard of her bed. "Alright." She shrugged lightly. Her face straightened as she tired to read her daughter. "You really like him, don't you?" She opened her mouth to say something- but stopped. The last thing she wanted Haven to think was that she was a meddling mother- although she did hate the fact that Haven didn't say more about James. Of course she could understand why. Kaylee was her mother, not her best friend- why would Haven talk about a crush or anything to do with guys? She shook the thoughts from her head and smiled once again. She pulled Haven toward her and kissed her forehead. "I love you."

Haven hesistated. She didn't know what was up. Nor whether she should tell her mother or not. "Yes it was all." She wouldn't say anything about liking him now. He was new and there was enough stuff right now. Shrugging, she leaned on her side. "I dunno. He's a ncie friend."

She smiled as Haven laid on her side and spoke. "Well- everyone can use a friend." She said with a wink. She looked at her clock again. "I wonder what's keeping them." She said almost to herself. She figured at least Simon would've come back by now. "Well I guess we should start getting ready for bed. What do you think?" Kaylee asked assuming her daughter wouldn't want to talk much more about James.

Haven wouldn’t say what she thought. She was tired and wanted to go back to James. Nodding, she kissed her mother’s cheek again. “I love you mama.” Crawling into her bed, Haven went under the covers. The shuttle looked empty without Daniel in his bed and her father here. It was weird. “How long did it take for dad to say his feelings?” Haven knew the story, but wanted to know it again.

Kaylee smiled when she heard Haven say she loved her as she crawled into her bed. "I love you too baby girl." After another moment, Haven asked about how long it took Simon to reveal his feelings. She smiled and chuckled to herself. She had told her children the story many times- and each time she loved it even more. She figured she could stand to tell it again; it was a good way to pass the time until Simon and Daniel returned. "It took him a little while. He was nervous in the beginning mostly. That and his first priority at the time was taking care of River- which of course was understandable. It took him almost a year to admit his had regretted never being with me." She laughed a little. "Of course- his timing was impeccable just as it still is today. He waited until we all thought we were going to die before he said anything." She looked down for a moment and smiled again. "But he still told me. I guess for him it was easier to reveal everything once he thought he'd never have to face me again." She chuckled at Simon's obvious fear of rejection. "Of course- waiting so long and coming through an ordeal such as we all did," She paused and took in a deep breath. "It made it that much sweeter once we were finally together. Surviving what we did- it gave us the need to feel alive and not take anything for granted- even the fact that we could always say 'I'll tell them I love them tomorrow' and then find out it's too late." She stared off into space for a moment; thinking about the beginning of their relationship. She had to admit it seemed a bit cliche; almost like a fairytale gone awry, but she loved the story all the same- her story; their story.

Haven smiled. She loved her parents to death. It seemed normal to love your parents, but still. Her’s were special to her. Her dad risked everything for his family, for love. He risked it again for her mother. It wasn’t something everyone did. It made her happy to know that her family stood together instead of alone. For love. Always for love. Laughing lightly, she curled up in her bed. It was only a twin, but worked for her. Closing her eyes, she drifted to sleep as she listened to the end. This was her life and she’d never trad eit for the world.

After telling their story- Kaylee closed her eyes and listened to the silence- only invaded by the hum of the engines. Even in their part of the ship they could be heard. "Sweet dreams baby girl." She whispered to Haven as she turned on her side. She turned off the light directly next to the bed, but kept the others on so Simon and Daniel wouldn't trip later. She smiled as she closed her eyes. Her life was far from ordinary according to any one else's standards- but to her it was normal. And it was enough for her. She rested, waiting for Simon to return, hoping she would get to say goodnight to him before she fell asleep.

Simon stepped in through the hatch quietly. He stepped up to the bed quietly, unsure of whether Kaylee was asleep or not. He glanced round to the other bed and saw Haven lyeing in hers slipping off his shoes, he slid into bed next to Kaylee, and whispered in her ear "You still awake hun?"
