Personality: For an ex-Colonel, Bishop is rather laid back. Almost an icon within the Alliance, he was notorious for walking about the battlefield from A to B instructing his men where to move. Some saw this as a lack of fear, which is far from it. John's mentality at all times that if the most experienced and high ranking person appears afraid, everyone else will be. Thus, if he was going to get shot: he was going to get shot; at least his men would have the courage to keep fighting.
From a stranger's perspective he seems nothing more than a stone cold ex-soldier. But sitting down and talking to him in a personal matter reveals a different story. John participated in Serenity Valley and has more blood on his hands than most. After Miranda, John has a new outlook on life and will often go out of his way to help those less fortunate than himself. Some of his crew find "the Colonel's" attitude to this as weakness - while some commend it. Either way, John feels himself obligated to help those who were under the Alliance's foot for so long.
Background: John Bishop was born on Osirus to a military family. From a young age, his father whom was also a military man, pushed his son into the only life he knew. As soon as he met the requirements, John was put into Military Academy. From the get-go it was obvious to his instructors that he had a natural leadership quality to him. Every squad who was put under his command would ace any exercise or mock mission the instructors would throw at them. For that reason, at just 20, John Bishop was promoted to Sargent and shipped off to fight in the Unification War.
Bishop was instrumental in many of the Alliance's victories. His relentless attack on the independents near New Kasmir and his holding of Hill 44 at Du-Khang found himself being promoted at a high rate of speed (as were most who actually survived the battles during the war). At Serenity Valley Bishop, then Lieutenant, accompanied the reinforcements that landed the final blow on the independents within the valley. After the battle, he was promoted to Major and sent back to the Core.
It was in the Core that Bishop was briefly relegated to a desk job. It was not for several years (and several letters to high command) that he finally given his wish to return instead to the academy. Bishop was made head instructor and was known for his effective training: using the tactics he had witnessed by the browncoats to prepare his men for anything. Ironically, he was better suited as a guerilla fighter like a browncoat than an alliance member.
The revelations of the Miranda Broadcast was a turning point for John. His loyalty to the Alliance had been betrayed. The people he had killed during Unification had been freedom fighters; not rebels. All this time, he had been working for the bad guys, and that had to change. The first chance he could he resigned - leaving with his rank and reputation intact. He immediately collected his collected salary since his enlistment from the bank ; a small fortune. John made his way to the best and most affordable ship dealership on Osirus. It was there that the Streamhardt was christened. With some left over credits, John just had to find himself some people as crazy as him for crew.
Career/Occupation: Captain of the Streamhardt, Ex-Alliance Colonel.
Alliance or Browncoat or Niether: Previously Alliance, now Neutral
Talents/Special Abilities: From Bishop's experience he is adept in strategy and tactics, as well as having a deep knowledge of Alliance proceedure and protocols. This gives him the upper hand when dealing with authorities. He is also thoroughly trained in hand to hand and melee fighting.
Likes:
- Having cargo
- Smoking cigars
- Helping the unfortunate (his achillies heel)
- His crew
Dislikes:
- How the Alliance morally betrayed him
- Annoying passengers.
- Kicking butt and taking names
- Bickering
Other: Bishop's clothing is not what you would expect from someone ex-alliance. His tastes fall more into the domain of mercenaries, freelancers and criminals. He usually wears earthy tones and clothes with very basic design to them: functionality is the main focus. John tends to favour firearms although he is an expert at hand to hand fighting as well as with weapons from sticks and poles to knives and swords.

Stomp Stomp Stomp!
"Get out of the way Cretin!"
The young teen boy had only been tying his shoelaces before being pushed aside by the older woman. She was annoyed. Very annoyed. She had hoped that she had conveyed this to the young woman over the phone; especially a call at 5am. Lady Gray was meant to be overseer to the AVALANCHE Operations. She was the public leader for the small group. The main leaders were safe elsewhere; probable in some form of military bunker or a cave. Yet the benefactor of this little operation had gone to a meeting without her. Worse yet, she had not only met with a Shinra; but taken a Mercenary as escort. The Nerve! Her war experiences had taught her three main things. Never trust a Shinra. Never trust a Mercenary. And eat a healthy meal before a battle. She had followed the latter moments after her phone call. Gnawing on some steak was a great stress relief.
But the nerve of Selene. So she was young. Big deal! When Elizabeth was her age she was fighting in a man's world. She was alone in such a world. Yet this girl had many allies, and yet she continued to be manipulated and taken advantage of. And now, apparently, she had the intelligence of a Chocobo. That is not to say she hated her for it. She had never had the chance to marry or bear children. And of all the people she knew, Selene was the closest thing she had to a daughter. It wasn't picking on her, or lowering her self-esteem. The girl just had issues (quite a lot of them).
There were times when they hardly argued. Admittedly, she would pick up on something silly; like Selene's dress being too short. She wasn't trying to replace her mother. She just wanted to look out for her. Without a mother or father figure in place, she seemed to have real problems deciding what is right or wrong. Who to trust. Who to ignore. And this recent meeting had slumped Lady Gray's expectations of her to a low. It could of been a trap. The mercenary could of slain her. And while she was thinking of it, what was he even doing there in the first place. She should of passed him through Lady Gray before allowing him to go on some secret shady meeting. Or at least bring her along.
Now she did sound like a mother. Perhaps she just felt left out. She wanted to be there, knee-deep in the planning and background parts of AVALANCHE. Apparently, she was not. She was simply a sword-wielding mercenary on permanent contract. Well, at leas the pay was good. Most of the time she was just sitting around, waiting for something to happen.
But there was no changing her mind. She was going to put Selene in her place. Not out of spite or cruelty: but she needed it. Elizabeth needed her to learn that you had to think things in advance, than rush ahead. And what happened to Selene taking her offer of consul. She wanted advice from Lady Gray: but she hadn't asked her advice on a very important, and potential dangerous, meeting; with a Shinra! The Masters of disloyalty and deception.
Oh she was going to get it.
As she stomped through the Costa Del Sol streets in her trademark Cyan Armour, her skirt fluttered with the coastal breeze. Scanning the beach with her eyes, she saw her Liaison. What was she wearing? Couldn't she cover her legs up or something. It was a dress, which was an improvement from the mini-skirt idea a while back. But she was receiving significant glances from males. A few even whistled. Luckily, she had managed to glare at one of the lads; who sped up his walk.
As she stood over Selene, she maneuvered on purpose, so that her shadow came into the young woman's eye-line; her Armour made a very recognizable shadow. Without waiting for her to turn around, she murmured in a stern tone; with enough volume so that only Selene could hear her.
"I see you made it. I hope you were this punctual with Mr. Shinra" her last words some-what mocking of the girl's previous meeting with the son of lard-ass.
