This is the separate thread which describes the outer planets. Like the Core planets, it will describe the terrain, notable landmarks and some basic history. All info is from the Serenity RPG Book and again feel free to make additions.
Athens is known for its rapidly changing weather and near constant winds. Certain crops thrive here and there's plenty of marble to be quarried and shipped off-world. 'Ownership' changed many times during the war until the Alliance finally decided to bomb the major cities to drive out the Browncoats. The strategy worked as the few that survived lost everything. A few years after the war, the Alliance opened up the bombed-out cities for legal salvage operations. The cities became so chaotic that unlicensed salvagers could easily sneak in. The four moons have been terraformed and are a nice place to live than the planet. There is a constant threat of Reaver attacks and it has made the settlers of Whitefall over-protective and paranoid. There are rumors of a Blue Sun facility hidden in the mountains of Athens or one of the moons. Why it would be there is anyones guess.
Beylix is regarded as the system's garbage dump. The planet is owned mainly by United Reclamation who have scrap yards and refuse centers all over. After scavengers began to pick over the remains, United responded by licensing junk dealers to sell off what they can. As it turns out, that what was junk in the Core was treasure on the Rim. Some sold off rebuilt ships while the more creative ones sell old technology they've jury-rigged into something useful. Some go so far as to turn the junk into art and selling it back to the Core. Beylix is favored by smugglers as the Alliance or any of the big corporations pay any attention to this heap of feh wu.
Erza was once a peaceful planet of ranchers and farmers. But after the war, the governor died unexpectedly and the whole planet was thrown into chaos. The situation wasn't helped by the fact that thousands of war refugees and former soldiers from both sides were pouring into Erza. Jobs became scarce, the ranks of the unemployed swelled and the economy was crippled. Criminal 'lords' like Adelei Niska began to favor Erza as a base of operations due to the overwhelmed law enforcement. The Alliance have tried to appoint a new governor to deal with the situation but the new governor would have to confront Niska and a such there have been to candidates willing to take on the task. The law of the gun is absolute, if you can't defend what you've got then someone will take it. The situation is better now, more jobs have been created and Niska's presence isn't what it was, but it still far from being rectified.
Jiangyin is a small and suitable for ranching, foresting and very little else. There are small towns dotted all over the planet and they are places where folks just go about their business with little interference from the outside. The Alliance completely ignore Jiangyin and don't even bother to patrol the region due to the fact that the planet has nothing of value. Jiangyin has no central government, so each town or village is left to govern itself. Out of all the planets on the Rim, Jiangyin is one of the most primitive and backwards ones. The people are a simple lot, especially the folk that live up in the hills. They are superstitious and uneducated and they are forced to steal anything they can't acquire through lawful means.
Regina is a planet rich in mineral an is known for its massive mining operations. Over three-quarters of the population work in some part of the mining industry. Most of the mines are owned by the Corone Mining Corporation although there are still a few local owners hanging on. Corone's workers are underpaid and work in extremely hazardous conditions. The miners take a stoic pride in their work and the suffering they endure. The Alliance sponsors regular shipments of Pasceline-D which helps manage the Bowden's Malady condition. The people are dependent on the government handout and the shipments aren't as regular as they should be.
Before the war, the prairies of Shadow stretched out as far as the eye could see. Now, it is nothing more than a charred and blackened rock. Shadow was once known for its grain farms and cattle ranches. The planet was almost completely rural with small towns dotting the countryside. The people were hard-workers and independent minded, its no surprise that they were one of the first to stand against the Alliance. The aggressive bombing of Shadow was meant to teach the Browncoats a lesson about the might of the Alliance. Instead it only hardened the resolve of the those who fought and increased their hatred of the Alliance. Now, sadly, Shadow is nothing more than a ghost planet.
Verbena is a lush world of thick forests which has made clearing the land to farm difficult, though several fruit-producers have done well with large orchards. Verbena became the centerpiece of the Alliance's 'rejuvenation after Unification' campaign where they funded the construction of new buildings, including a factory to create parts for military vehicles. It was a promising start, but a former Independent soldier-turned-terrorist destroyed the factory, killing hundreds. This caused Verbena to go into an economic depression and created a hatred for the Independent movement. The Alliance have pledged to help but Verbena is very low on their list of priorities and have yet to do anything about it. A small security force in permanently stationed on Verbena supposedly to prevent further terrorist action, it is really there to make sure the restless population don't start any more riots, lootings or burnings.
