L I K E. P R A Y E R S. I N. M Y. P O C K E T S. Yawning, Donovan had had a long day. A woman went into labor and it had been a difficult one. She hadn’t gotten proper nutrition so the baby was a little smaller then he liked. Both would stay in a room for a night or two then get released. As long as they didn’t suddenly fill up then the new family should have a private room. Once a doctor cleared the baby then they would be leaving Dardania anyways. Between that and a mix up in the lab, it had been stressful. A lab technician was thoroughly scolded for his actions. It didn’t matter that they weren’t a big hospital, there was no need for problems such as this. Even their students needed to learn that order had to be kept so the wrong news wasn’t given to a healthy patient.
What he needed was a drink.
With that in mind, Donovan had gone to his quarters and changed into something more relaxed. For once he had managed not to have to work the coming morning unless something happened. Once comfortable, he waltzed out into the corridor. Nodding to a few people he didn’t have too far to walk. The common areas were right by the medical area. Convient so as people were in surgery or giving birth people could grab a drink to ease their nerves. walking right into the bar and lounge area he went up to the smooth counters. Ordering just some rough planetside beer, he tapped the smoother surfaced as he looked around. Right now it was fairly calm. There were a couple pool tables and some dart boards but other games were in the next room. Such as arcade and CGI ones. He didn’t really like them himself but Donovan knew many of the kids here with their parent’s and twenty-somethings did. Perhaps he was just old.
When the glass met his hand, he moved away to plop on a couch near the adult game area as he said. Careful not to have any liquid spill over, he took a drag from the glass. A gaze around showed not many people who he wanted to strike a conversation up with right away. Shrugging it off he simply sunk into the couch that didn’t match the other’s but was well worn. Music blared from the stereo of songs people requested. Some were from Earth-that-was and others were newer. Donovan didn’t care. He was relaxed either way.

It was her first time up on the space station and her views as she walked off the transport ship were amazing. It was like being on a core planet but with close up views of space. All of the best technology was around and everyone was wearing clean clothing. Madelyn must have stuck out so much since she was still in her ragged pants and jacket covered in dust, but it had been the windy season on that dry moon she had been on. That planet had just been awful but after a few bad moves on her part she got stuck there. Money was slowly running out so she would need to take a job soon or find some sort of stability. Luckily she had won the ticket to the space station off of a "friend type person" but she assumed that he lost on purpose. Afterall this friend had been friends with her father and tried to help out his old friend's daughter in whatever ways he could. Madelyn sighed and found a public wash room to clean up and maybe fit in with this crowd. Actually Madelyn had been born on a core planet and raised well so she still had her nicer clothing. It was her mother's dress actually and made from fine silk, to madelyn's surprise it was as clean as it could be. It fit Madelyn as it should and made her look like an actual women, not a women covered in dirty. Finally she left the public wash room feeling much better and like maybe her luck was really starting to turn around for the better. Her day was spent enjoying the sites and just walking around the space station. Of course at the same time she was looking for a place to stay for the evening and eventually she settled for a little hotel that offered her a good rate. The hotel was really jsut a place to drop her stuff and to sleep for a few hours later that night. Maybe if she was really lucky she would run into one of her father's old friends who would let her stay for a bit but her father's old friends were becoming fewer and fewer. Really she would have to rely on the kindness of strangers to get her by until she found a job. A good place to meet people was always the bar and Madelyn needed a good drink that was not mixed with dirt like it was on the border planets. There was a bar close to her hotel so she figured that she could start there and move around if needed. Once inside she noticed that it was a pretty nice and relaxing place and she giggled to herself about how there was probably no need for a gun at a place like this. Either way hers rested in the jacket she was carrying with her. She placed the jacket on the bar stool next to her once she took a seat. A drink was ordered and a soft breath exscaped her lips. This was the place that she needed to be right now. center]

L I K E. P R A Y E R S. I N. M Y. P O C K E T S. The one thing that was always bad about having a stretch of time to relax was Donovan thought about his wife. When busy he only had glancing thoughts of her, in happy memories to try and keep himself calm. But when he was left alone with his thoughts the hurt crept back in. He had stopped from feeling the numb pain long ago. Still, there were moments he could still grieve. She was the only woman he had ever loved. He still had his wedding ring though hardly wore it while working. He was always afraid of doing something to it. Right now he was waiting for a chain to keep it on plus getting his rings fused together. Lately he had been missing her more and wanted a piece of her close. He figured he could get it fused so his was circling around hers. It’s be a nice thing in memory of her. Sometimes he felt it made him a better doctor because Donovan didn’t want any other family to go through what he had to. Whenever a patient came in, Donovan did everything he could to get the fixed up properly. A few of those people were here right now. Others about him he had treated, even for just a once over physical. It helped him keep a rough track of some of the regulars around here.
Donovan turned his head as a young blond woman settled down. She was a newcomer and that was why she caught his eye. As the head medic he knew most of the people who were regular visitors or lived on the station. He watched her for a little while. She was a bit different. Seemed like she kept from a proper background but there was a roughness about her. Or maybe it was the alcohol kicking in. Most people seemed to have two sides to them. He himself tried to be as well put together as possible but people mistook him for being more on the crude side. Only because he liked to be hands on with everything and knew some shortcuts to save time and money. Donovan had a theory that even if a person was brought up one way, there were times they had to be the complete opposite of what they were used to. There were plenty of times up here Donovan had to do that because people thought he was still the Alliance’s little errand boy.
Needing a refill on his glass, he sighed and pushed himself up. Two just wasn’t enough for him to really feel good. His body leaned against the bar as he sighed. He really didn’t get to loosen up after work enough. That was the downfall about running the medical center-he always had to play it safe. Hands rubbed at his eyelids as he yawned. He turned his head to the side and smiled at the newcomer. ”What brings you to Dardania?” Donovan wasn’t being flirtatious in how he asked the question. No, he was genuinely curious about her. His love of learning things and interacting with people is what led him to a career in medicine. He wanted to learn as much about the human body as he possibly could. Then he had always wanted to make people feel better. Be it with laughter or just a kind word while they grieved. [

Her gaze drifted to the different people that. From person to person she noticed the difference between her and them. How different she looked from the rest of them. They were all in fancy clothing that had lots of silver. It was weird since they all looked rich and Madelyn would have loved to just have enough to get by. Maybe it was worth coning someone into buying her a few drinks, then she would loosen up enough to make money selling her body. She remembered the first time that happened. It was this small little bar on one of those moons that still is working on getting thier law into play. It had been about a month since her father had gone and a man about the same age as his approached her.
The next morning she woke up with that man still dead asleep next to her. He had this dumb smile on his face and he was snoring up a storm. Madelyn looked out the small window at the sun, the worst part about that little moon was that it was close to a sun so it was hot and dry. As she got dressed she picked up the man's wallet and took everything she could take. It was enough for her to get off that little moon and to a much better planet. It was rare for her to do this but when she needed it. Secretly she was worried that her father was watching down over her and not proud when it happened.
Maybe that's why she only did this when she completely down on her luck. After all her mother was apparently a companion so why hadn't Madelyn taken that path? As she was thinking she heard a man speak to her. There was no hello or greeting, just a simple question and Madelyn turned to look at him. Obviously he wasnt the law but the lack of greeting confused her. "Who cares to know?" She replied. It could have been someone her father had known which could mean trouble. Quickly she finished off her drink and moved her hand to her leg in case she needed to go for the gun any time soon.

L I K E. P R A Y E R S. I N. M Y. P O C K E T S. When it got down to times that he was alone, just thinking, Donovan would beat himself up. he’d beat himself about comrades lost at the war. Or about his wife’s death. Or about his decision to come up here. Or just about anything that day which had made him feel worthless. To avoid that he usually tried to distract himself but it didn’t always work out that way. Tonight most of his friend’s were busy and he didn’t know when he’d have a moment to just relax like this again. playing with a spare dart laying on a small table, he spun it with the tip between his fingers. Right now Donovan was trying to drain all his thoughts. Whenever he thought of something that may stress him out he’d just watch the dart that spun between his fingers. Until he caught sight of the newcomer and his interest was peeked. Even if they thought he was a total creep, the distraction of a newcomers stories was worth it.
Donovan chuckled. This girl had spunk which was a gift. You needed it to survive around here. Sticking a hand out, he figured he should introduce himself properly. ”Donovan LaBeouf. Resident nosy body and head medic. What about you?” From what he figured he was old enough to be her father so he just hoped he wasn’t coming off creepy. His body faced the bar with a bit of space between them. When his drink came he gripped it in his hand and sipped at the mead mixture. ”I just know most everyone who comes in and out of here regularly. I get interested whenever I see a new face so if I’m a pain well I’ve probably heard it all before for insults.” Being a doctor you got called a lot of names and Donovan had gotten used to it. Even before that in the war obscenities traveled like they were nothing.

Being alone was what she was used to since her father died. That night always seemed to haunt her in nightmares that would strike so unexpectedly. She would often wake up in a cold sweat and be panting like she had just run for her life. At least she no longer woke up screaming. If she had screamed that night then Madelyn would have been dead too. It was like her father knew that man was coming when he woke her up and shoved her into that closet while he grabbed his gun. Madelyn took another swallow of her drink before she set it back down on the bar. Was this man coming for her the way that man came for her father?
She only seemed to relax a little when he finally introduced himself as the local doctor. Medics were important people in times like these, it was a wonderful skill to have. She thought that he should be proud of that at least. But he asked for her name and she wondered if it was worth giving since at the end of the night he would leave her and she would have been just another girl in the bar. "A Traveler here for a few days." She replied to him. The truth was that she had no idea how long she would be on the space station.
She did not know how to respond to his comment about knowing everyone and being interested by new people. "its a space station... shouldnt there be alot of new faces every day? This place should just be a post for refueling or change ships... not a home." She commented. This space station would never be home for her if she got stuck here. A home was what she was longing for. Some place to go to every night with a person that loved you.

L I K E. P R A Y E R S. I N. M Y. P O C K E T S. When Donovan had first met his wife, she was the one who got him to open up again. After the war he had closed himself off and dedicated to studying medicine. He had always kept his humor but didn’t really venture out there that much. Then Risa had gotten him to open up by taking spontaneous trips and even helping him move past the trouble he had encountered between the war and school. It was like all the bad he had done didn’t matter and she made him focus on the good he had done. Risa was always trying to bring the good out in people, even when her disease came back. As she slowly died, Donovan saw a piece of himself going. His father had discouraged him from falling for a sick girl from the beginning but he really couldn’t help it too much. Who you fell in love with wasn’t planned out Since then he hadn’t fallen in love again either. Perhaps it wasn’t in the cards but Donovan wasn’t pushing it.
Instead he like to just have connections with his friends and colleagues. Most of them knew he had been married and she passed but not all the finer details. That was something too personal and he just tried to keep it to himself. If someone walked into his living quarters they would see the little memorial he had set up for her: their wedding photo, a couple of them together, some candids of her and a more professional shot. Candles were set up and on dates that were important to them or her he lit the wax spheres. The rest of his life was an open book and that’s how he tried to live. That’s why sometimes Donovan would be a little too forward in talking to people who seemed interesting to him. Be them strangers or patients.
Donovan nodded as he chuckled again. Raising his brows he took another sip of his drink before speaking. ”Yeah but they usually hang around the observation halls while their ship is fueled. Usual people who come around this room are here because they aren’t heading right off.” In his general observations when being around here either captains just came in quick to stock up on booze or haggle someone. Rarely did a passerby come in and sit like they were having a thoughtful drink. Or a stoic one. This girl’s seemed a bit more like she wanted to just go by unnoticed or maybe noticed but only by certain people. ”Well if you are a traveler where are you heading out to next?” Even her held off demeanor didn’t deter Donovan from trying to talk to her. His curiosity was getting the best of him and he wanted to see why she was here. He always wanted to know people’s stories because the stories are what made them who they were today.

The life of a traveler was starting to loose its glamor. At first when she took off on a space ship to another planet she was excited and all of the people were interesting. There were exciting stories to be told. During that first space ship ride she sat with a few older people and listened to talks about thier home planets and the universe while her father slept. At the time she had no idea that would be one of the last nights she would see her father. Her gaze stayed on the drink andshe focused on the wieght of the gun in her pocket. Heavy like a burden that she didnt want to carry anymore and in many ways its weight was always on her mind.
But she knew that he was right about people who were planning on leaving would stay close to the ships soon. The ticket price had to be right for Madelyn before she would leave and the location had to be a core planet. There was always work on the core planets and with her father's last name she would get in some place easily. "Some of us are waiting for the right ticket" She admitted to him. Or maybe she was waiting for the right person to come along and make her feel like she was normal again.
"Wherever the oppurtunity takes me.... or whoever can take me." She told him. On some level she wanted a person to come into her life and do something. Part of her wanted that father figure back and the other part wanted a lover. One of her hands moved up and ran her fingers through her hair and pulled on the soft curls. "You said medic right... how is that around here? There must not be much action except for a sick person here or there."

Heavy like a burden that she didnt want to carry anymore and in many ways its weight was always on her mind.
Donovan raised his glass and twirled it about in thought. There were plenty of transports that went in and out daily or larger ships willing to take on passengers. ”Well what’re your skills or anything you wish to dabble in? Perhaps I can point you in the right direction. I know a few of the guys who work the cargo ships that ferry things we need.” Asher was the best here on Dardania but he didn’t take too kindly to having passengers. Plus one didn’t know where he was going until sometimes the day before. Usually Donovan could bribe him well enough to be nice but that was if he liked that person. Donovan didn’t have a straight feeling on the girl so he wasn’t sure if it’d be worth it getting her a ride with his friend or not.
With his brows stitched together, he gazed over at her. Her tone had been weird with her last statement but he just tried to get past it. Now-a-days he stayed locked up in the medical wing so long he wasn’t sure how people tried to come across lately. ”Well we’ve got plenty of jobs around here. Feds tend to stay out of our way because they have nothing to do with what goes on up here. Safe for people wanting to get away.” Donovan didn’t need to get away but he found it to be a rather safe place. At least people stayed out of his way when he was working and let him be when he went to his living quarters. It could be a lonely life but he felt like since his wife died that’s how it should be; him living alone. He already knew love wasn’t in the cards for him again and he was alright with that. Even after all these years he always felt like there was only ever one person in the universe that any one person was meant for. Despite her passing he felt like he shouldn’t move on.
The thoughts of her had him downing another drink and immediately wanting another. Once he got another ordered he put it out to just keep them coming as he emptied. Usually they knew when it was best to cut him off since he hardly ever drank. ”Well no nothing really hardcore. Sometimes people rescued from stranded ships and we’ve have pretty brutal fights when we have a weapons expo. Otherwise they’re a lot of sick folk who travel from this system looking for help since no one else will.” Despite how he had faith in the Alliance, at the same time they had troubles with how they operated. Usually they people who were sick but couldn’t pay were put to the back. There was no way to help people pay for health care since insurance never came with Earth-That-Was. Everything was about politics and money and who you were connected to. Pathetic to think people could get by on just that.
”We have a small group of students we teach more rustic approaches to medicine. Some have ambitions of traveling to help towns that don’t have a proper doctor and learning with fancy equipment doesn’t come in handy there.” He had gotten the chance to learn when he was in the war and found it more useful to pass it on then have them waste their time on bigger schools. To get by with the rougher areas it was best to have rougher skills.
