Basics:
Name: Tristan Jacob (TJ) Sebastian Tam
Age: Twenty-Three
Picture:
Build: Slim and lanky, but has enough strength in his muscles to carry heavy engine parts. It’s just really well hidden.
Hair: Short brown hair that has a tendency to stick up all over the place, much to his chagrin.
Eye colour: Intense brown eyes
Height: 6’1”
Skin Tone: Fair skinned that freckles during exposure to too much sun when planetside.
Personal:
Personality (a paragraph at least): Intense and profound Tristan is very devoted to his family and his life. He spends hours in thought, usually when his tinkering around the engine room. He likes to keep to himself because of how intuitive he can be. Touch is something he does not do and is usually the first to step away if intimacy is probable. After years of trying to control his mind from wandering when he touches someone he’s just decided that not touching anyone is just a far easier approach to life. This makes Tristan appear withdrawn and shy. It’s not a shyness of sort. It’s literally the fact that he can read peoples thoughts and emotions the moment he touches them. It is a frightening experience and he hates the talent, hates his mind for allowing such a thing to happen. This leads Tristan to not trust easily. He is afraid of what others might think if they know about what he can do, as such the only person that knows is his own aunt, who figured it out on her own.
The mental abilities aside there is far more to Tristan than just what lies in his mind. He is thoughtful, dignified, and reserved. He’s very much like his father in that respect. He keeps his emotions under lock and key, but there is an intensity that sits right under the surface. It’s not often that he lets loose the bottled up emotions, but when he does it is a rather terrifying experience for anyone that is involved. For those that are particularly perceptive they’ll see that captivating intensity, charisma, observant composure, and harnessed aggression that lies right under the surface.
On the surface Tristan appears calm, calculated, and hyper aware of everything around him. He hides out away from the crowds of people so he can read and think. He isn’t one to forgive very easily and he never forgets anything. Where his sister has faith Tristan has none. It’s probably the one thing Tristan refuses to discuss with her. It’s hard for him to wrap his mind around a deity that doesn’t seem to care about anyone in the ‘verse, especially his small family. So he philosophises as opposed to believing in God. It suits him all the same. His brain is too wired in the science of the world to accept unquantifiable mechanics.
Background (a paragraph at least): Tristan Tam was born on Serenity, along with his twin sister, Haven. They grew up there, together. So there is nowhere else in the ‘verse that is more like home to Tristan than Serenity. As a kid he was basically raised by everyone on the boat. The phrase ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ is very accurate for Tristan. He learned everything there was to know about the known ‘verse and its history from the various ‘family members’ he had on board Serenity. From talk of Earth-That-Was to lessons in shooting, sword play, and crime to the history of the war between the Alliance and the Independence. What the people didn’t tell him he was able to find out through books or the Cortex itself.
While his sister was the Troublemaker Tristan was by far the complete opposite. He hated causing trouble and was usually the one to tell his sister that her adventures weren’t the brightest ideas. It was during these childhood years that Tristan really began to notice things that weren’t of the norm. Subtle hints in thoughts from those around him started to appear in his mind any time he touched someone. For the longest time he attributed it to living on a boat with the same people for years. Eventually you just get to know everyone that well, but as he got older and he was able to focus on things more clearly he began to realize that he and his aunt had a commonality. They could both read people.
This led Tristan to really set himself aside from the others. He spent most of his time in the engine room. The few people that he’d spend his free time with were his sister, the Washburne kid, and his aunt, River. His sister made him feel needed and wanted. She had this way of just bringing him out of any funks he fell into. Those days he’d spend in the engine room, tinkering with anything and everything just so he was alone were usually always crashed by Haven or Washburne. Part of him still wonders if those moments weren’t orchestrated by his parents to get him to socialize. Whatever they were it actually did have a lasting effect on his life. Those were the moments they’d run around the ship, throwing caution to the wind, and living life to the fullest. They were the moments Tristan needed because those were the few times he actually laughed and smiled without conscious thought of doing it.
Those times have long passed now. Tristan is twenty-three and spends his time in the engine room, sometimes by himself, most of the time with his mother. Serenity is hauling about some passengers, trying to appear honest, and Haven is leaving Serenity. The latter of the news is what has Tristan crushed beyond anything imaginable. He knew, deep down, that this wasn’t the least bit surprising, but his sister was the one person he could always count on. She was the one that knew how to break through all of his walls and the one person he allowed to touch him. With this news though he’s drawn back. He’s hiding from her and avoiding her at all costs. A part of him feels abandoned, while the other part thinks he should join her, but Serenity is his home and there’s no way he can leave his home, is there?
Career/Occupation: mechanic
Alliance or Browncoat or Neither: Browncoat (Independence)
Talents/Special Abilities: Other than having a vast knowledge of technical mumbo-jumbo Tristan is very good with weaponry. Taking guns apart and putting them back together blindfold is something he prides himself on. He's also a good shot. He is highly intuitive and intelligent. He has the ability to read people's emotions and thoughts if he touches them. This psychic ability only presents itself when he is touching someone else. It is probably both a blessing and a curse that it works like that. Not quite driving him insane, but keeping him cut off from everyone else emotionally and physically.

Other: TJ knows his way around just about any piece of weaponry imaginable. Jayne has been instrumental in his teachings of what pieces are best to what end. However, he’s taken to lessons of sword play from Inara the best. That’s not to say he can’t handle a gun. He can and he’s actually quite good with one. He just prefers more hand to hand combat. As for clothes, he’s more into keeping a casual look about him, but has been known to slip into one of his father’s old fancy clothes. He doesn’t have the best eye sight so he pulls out a pair of rectangular framed lenses when he’s reading.

Tristan dusted off his hands as he sat back on his haunches. Engine grease was caked to his hands and clothes. More than likely to his face as well, but he didn’t have a mirror to find out for certain. Not that his appearance really meant much to him anyway. He was more concerned with whether or not Serenity was going to be able to deal with his attempt to utilize more power from the fuel cells in the trace compression block engine. It wasn’t going to be a real difference, but it was definitely a chance at boosting the power in the engine and allowing Serenity the ability to meet deadlines even if they were running late. It was apparent after all these years that jobs never went the way they were planned. So being able to add thirty minutes or more to the speed and power of the ship, in their line of work, is definitely important.
Serenity was all he’d ever known, but now his world was starting to fall apart around him. His sister wanted to leave everyone behind, even him. She didn’t even seem to want to bring him with her. I guess there comes a point when family has to break away from each other in order to move on, but still Tristan never thought it was going to happen with them. His sister was his everything, aside from Serenity. She was the one he looked up to, the only one that really understood him. Without her he was going to be alone, truly and utterly alone. It was a harsh reality to be faced with, one that was going to break his heart.
A sigh escaped his lips as he nodded in satisfaction at the work he’d done on the engine. After a moment he slowly got to his feet. That’s when he noticed the shape in the corner of his eye. Tristan turned his head and a soft smile formed at the familiar outline of his sister at the door. A part of him wanted to disappear, avoid her and everything she brought on him by telling him her plans to leave, but she was still his sister and at the moment that’s what mattered most to him. “So let me guess, you’ve gotten yourself in a fix and you need my help? Or are you planning your next great adventure and need me to cover for you?” Tristan asked in amusement before wiping his hands on a towel that was draped across one of the man pipes.
