Bella heard the music fade and turn into something upbeat that she used to waltz to back at her grandmother’s. Rubbing her eyes, her hair was slightly messed up. Not caring, she just curled her knees to her chest, resting there a moment. The music made her sway on her bed, remembering a time of ruffling skirts and manners.
Bella entered the ball room, a smile on her face. A entirely fake smile. She did it alot these times. Her grandmother would probably try to find her a proper boyfriend. One of eloquence and high stature. Sighing, she felt uncomfortable seeing all the people she hated most, but greeted them like old friends. Her and Alec had just broken up a couple months ago, and she was just begining to heal. She no longer loved him like she used to. She realized it was better a friendship.
Reaching her grandmother, she curtsied. She was only sixteen, but plotting her second attempt for a runaway in a few months time. Kissing each of her grandmother’s cheek, she smiled. “Hello grandmother. New friends?” There was a new gentleman and she only could guess the plots. A wicked smile spread across the old woman’s face. “Yes. I was talking to Ambassador Charleston and his son, Lance. Lance is planning to take over his father’s business someday.” Bella smiled kindly. “How lovely.” Sarcasm was just hinted upon there, but she tried to hide it. Her grandmother’s stare was cold. “Well, we’ll leave you two alone.” Lacing her hand through the Ambassador’s arm, Laline led him away.
Then the awkward parts began. Bella smiled slightly, wringing her hands. Lance smiled, offering his hand. “A dance?” Bella, unable to refuse, nodded, grabbing his hand, hating her grandmother more. “Yes.” A new waltz came on as Bella curtsied again and began to dance with the boy. Seeing Betty, she tried to signal for help as she listened to talk of the law firm his father ran and wanted to follow and become Ambassador. Bella was bored yet again. Seeing Alec, she clapped at the end of the song. Curtsying out, she moved through the crowd before she could be seen and ran to her best friend and mu.
“If I have to dance with another stupid boy one more time!” She threatened in the air as she ran out to the stables. The food was done, so Betty could follow. Two kind sets of arms encircled her. She let out a sob. “Why did my father send me here? I would have been happy at home.” Pulling away, she went to her horse, Firestone, and patted her neck, wiping the tears away. “Nyen ching-duh, my little one, she is trying to do what’s best.” Alec hung back, not wanting to talk about the guys. Bella turned fiercely. “If she knew what was best, she’d butt out. I don’t want any stuffy guys. I don’t want to be locked away in a tower forever. I want to cook. Be a chef like you. But no one sees that.”
Kicking her shoes off, Bella picked them up and ran out to the tree. Alec ran after her, keeping his promise of never letting her go alone. As Bella climbed, she had to keep her skirts up. Then she settled on her favorite branch and her best friend came next to her. “Just a few more months Bella baby. Just a few more. Then your gone form her clutches.” A few months was it. Then Bella ran as hard and fast as she could. Long and hard. Alec was hurt in the process, so she had to help him mend his wounds after, but she left Londinium for the time, knowing she had tons of things to retrieve.
Bella shook all the thoughts away from her mind. That seemed to be forever ago when it was only less then five years ago. The stuff balls and formal dinners. Bella did not miss them at all. Laying back down, she fell spread eagle with her arms above her and her feet hanging off the bed.
